Early Morning Single Car Crash Injures Woman in Newark's Central

Police in Newark are trying to determine how the female driver of a car crashed the vehicle near a church early Sunday morning. 

With no parked vehicles on the street or little to no traffic, firefighters found the crashed car just outside the Arts High School building located in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

According to an initial investigation, the driver somehow lost control of her car and struck a fire hydrant the slammed into a street sign and a steel gate at the -old- St. Nicholas Greek Church, which is now the Willing Heart Community Center. 

The severely damaged vehicle came to rest at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Mercer Street, the woman suffering non-fatal injuries.

The impact of the collision sent a fire hydrant flying to the other side of the street.

Police believe no other vehicles were involved in the crash and speed or DWI hasn't been reported as a cause of the collision at this time. 

The investigation remains active.
