The People’s Organization for Progress will host an emergency press conference to observe the anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd at the Lincoln Monument, 12 Springfield Av Newark, at 12 noon.
In a press release this morning, 'POP' officials said Mr. George Floyd was killed last year in a spectacle killing by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in a more than nine-minute death grip and press employed on Floyd, who was already in handcuffed and who was totally subdued.
According to POP officials, the incident became a spectacle as it was videotaped by witnesses who all pleaded for the officer to stop his lethal actions. It triggered mass protests against police brutality all over the world. Chauvin was recently convicted of murder for Floyd’s death, an extremely rare feat in American police killings.
Only three days earlier, on May 22nd, POP officials said Mr. Maurice Gordon was killed here in Bass River, New Jersey, by a NJ State Trooper while suffering a mental health crisis. His attorney is still seeking more footage and more records from the incident from the NJ Attorney General.
Like most police brutality cases, Gordon's case got far less attention than Floyd’s officials at POP said.
Just days after these killings, the People’s Organization for Progress hosted a march and rally condemning these killings that drew at least 12,000 participants to Newark.
The press conference will call for passing Honorable Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight’s Civilian Complaint Review Board Bill and for the reopening of several NJ police killing cases that were never meaningfully investigated by the State of New Jersey.
