NJ Transit officials are investigating a pedestrian strike that resulted in fatal injuries on Norfolk Southern freight rail tracks this afternoon.
According to NJ Transit, at approximately 3:05 p.m., Raritan Valley Line train 5179, which departed from Penn Station New York at 2:39 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at High Bridge Station at 4:30 p.m., struck and fatally injured an adult male pedestrian approximately two and a half miles east of Union Station in Newark close to Meeker Avenue.
Officials said there were no injuries reported to the approximately 75 customers or the crew on board the train at the time.
Raritan Valley Line service was briefly suspended between Cranford Station and Newark Penn Station but has since resumed. According to officials, customers were accommodated by substitute bus service.
New Jersey Transit Police are on scene leading the investigation.
