The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into separate overnight shootings that injured two victims in Paterson.
In the first incident, police said units responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the area of Straight and Essex streets just before 9:45 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found nearly 20 shell casings and a vehicle struck by bullets, but a search of the area indicated no victims.
Police said while detectives investigated at the scene, officials at St. Jospeph's Hospital alerted them that a gunshot victim entered the emergency room suffering a non-life-threatening injury.
In the remaining shooting incident, just before 1:10 a.m., St. Joseph's Hospital officials notified police that a male victim entered the emergency room suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Police say the victim suffered his injury when a gunman fired rounds in his direction in the 200 block of 12th Avenue.
In both shootings, just over two dozen shell casings were recovered by police.
The motive for the shootings is under investigation.
