Police have a crime scene established and an investigation underway into a shooting that left a child injured this afternoon in Newark’s West Ward.
A preliminary investigation indicated at approximately 1:15 p.m., shooters blasted multiple rounds of gunfire in the vicinity of 14th Avenue and South 6th Street, sending police to the scene to investigate.
When officers arrived, they found multiple shell casings, but after a search of the neighborhood, no victims were found.
While police canvassed the crime scene, officials at University Hospital notified Newark Police when a woman brought a bleeding child around 2-year-old to the emergency room suffering a gunshot wound.
Police believe that this is where the child was the unintended target of a stray bullet.
Police have the neighborhood sealed and are now on the search for the suspects responsible.
