Police in Brick have announced that they are investigating a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian on Route 70 on Monday evening.
According to police, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the pedestrian, Kathleen M. Winits, 55, of Brick was crossing Route 70 at Olden Street, going towards the Brick Motor Inn Motel. Winits had crossed Route 70 against the pedestrian crossing signal, and she was not in the crosswalk.
Police said that a white Mercedes, driven by Jennifer L. Squires, 43, of Brick, was traveling in the left travel lane, eastbound on Route 70 approaching the intersection with a green light. The Mercedes then struck the Winits and then came to a controlled stop.
Officials said that the Winits was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no reported injures for Squires
The Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit and the NJ Department of Transportation responded to assist with the investigation and traffic.
Police said that witnesses at the scene reported that the pedestrian ran out into traffic.
The investigation is currently active and ongoing.
