Harrison Town

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County Grand Jury has returned a three-count indictment charging Rafaella Maranhao, 29, of Harrison with two counts vehicular homicide and one count of assault by auto.   At this time Maranhao is wanted. Shortly after the fatal crash Maranhao fled to Brazil, where she is a citizen.   The indictment alleges that during the early morning hours of May 11, 2014, Maranhao killed Peter Figueroa, 32, of Newark while driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol on the New Jersey Turnpike.   Figueroa, a front seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2 am.   Two other passengers in the car were injured and transported to University Hospital. Prince Stoney, 35, of Elizabeth died on June 7, 2014 from his injuries. Taleisha Charles sustained injuries but survived.   These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
