Heavy Newark Police Enforcement Cracks Overnight Carjacking Spree

Newark

A police pursuit for suspects wanted for multiple carjackings in Newark ended in the arrests of one suspect and a search for a second person who bailed from the vehicle and led officers on a foot pursuit in the city's South Ward around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

According to a preliminary investigation, it all began before 11 p.m. where - in one of the incidents -  two females and a male pulled up to the owner of a gold 2020 Kia Sorrento in the vicinity of 284 Oration Street then snatched away the car at gunpoint.

Police say the suspects sped away in the vehicle and were last seen heading southbound on McCarter Highway.

According to Newark Police officials, at approximately 1 a.m., the same suspects ambushed a victim near 95 Schuler Avenue and took their Volvo S80 at gunpoint. Police say that an unoccupied vehicle was recovered in Irvington Township less than 30 minutes later.

In one of the final carjackings, police say, suspects -only described as two females- approached the owner of a 2013 Nissan Rogue in the 100 block of Chadwick, then pointed their guns and took the vehicle. Police said officers on alert citywide immediately recovered that unoccupied vehicle in the 30's block of Woodland.

Heavy police activity with stepped-up patrol unit enforcement canvassing just about every section of the city spotted the suspects traveling at a high rate of speed then crashed after a brief pursuit in the area of 132 Telford Street after leading officers through several parts of Newark.

There were no physical injuries reported.

All three vehicles have been recovered and the suspect is reportedly connected to all of the overnight carjackings.
