Firefighters Extinguish Fire at Supermarket in Newark's West Ward

Newark

Firefighters in Newark's West Ward battled fire inside a commercial building that erupted late Monday night.

The fast-moving fire ignited around 10:15 p.m. at the C-Town Supermarket located at 910 18th Avenue.

Crews at a nearby firehouse rushed to the business and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, then struck a second alarm for additional manpower.

Firefighters isolated the seat of the fire to an air conditioning unit on the roof of the supermarket. They notified PSE&G to cut power to the unit that started spreading to the building's cockloft.

According to fire officials, entry was made into the building to check for trapped and injured occupants, but no victims were found.

The fire was placed under control just before midnight, with the cause under investigation.
