Jersey City Man Charged with Burning Two Children with Cigarettes

Police say Mr. Jaimear Butler, of Jersey City, has been charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4A(2), a crime of the third degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Other Weapon) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5D, a crime of the fourth degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes (Other Weapon) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4D, a crime of the third degree; Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1B(7), a crime of the third degree; and Witness Tampering in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:28-5A(1)(2), a crime of the second degree.

According to police, on December 28, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit were notified by the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency about an allegation of two abused children who reside in Jersey City.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Butler physically abused both children – a nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl – by intentionally burning them with a cigarette lighter on their bodies.   Police say Butler was arrested on Monday, January 4, 2021 at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit for the investigation and arrest.

Officials said the above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
