Irvington Fire Units received multiple calls reporting a fire in the gas station in the area of Coit Street and Paine Ave.
Upon arrival, crews found an occupied, one-story, brick auto repair shop with a heavy fire condition showing from the rear of 451-53 Coit Street.
Officials said the fire began to extend to exposure D, a vacant, one-story, wood-frame bar at 447 Coit Street.
A second alarm was transmitted and crews began an aggressive interior attack. Units were unable to make progress on the fire due to heavy fire loading, the presence of hazardous materials, and a rapidly extending volume of fire.
Operations were transitioned to exterior operations and the large body of fire was knocked down. Firefighters re-entered the building and completed overhaul and final extinguishment of the fire. Damage to the structure was significant, but no injuries were reported.
Assistance was provided by the Newark, Maplewood, East Orange, Orange, West Orange, Montclair, and Bloomfield Fire Departments.
Officials said the gas station at 465 Coit Street suffered minor smoke and water damage but remained open.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
