Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has announced that a Jersey City man has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury for his involvement in a crash early Monday morning in Hoboken that injured a 24-year-old cyclist.
On Wednesday, September 30, at approximately 10 a.m., Ryan Varrone, 32, turned himself into detectives with the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit.
According to police, on Monday, September 28, members of the Hoboken Police Department responded to the area of Garden and First streets at approximately 12:50 a.m. on reports of a pedestrian struck.
When they arrived, they found the victim, a New Hampshire man, had been struck while riding a bicycle on Garden Street with two friends.
Police report that as a result of his injuries, the victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.
According to the initial investigation, Varrone – an agent with the U.S. Division of Homeland Security who was off duty at the time – initially stopped, but then left the scene.
Varrone was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Bodily Injury and Endangering an Injured Victim.
Varrone was also charged with the following Title 39 Motor Vehicle violations: Failure to Stop, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, Failure to Obey Signal and Improper Safety Glass.
The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
