The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into a shooting that left a man dead near the Central and South Ward borders on Saturday morning.
According to a preliminary investigation by officials, at approximately 12:45 a.m., a ShotSpotter detection device alerted police of multiple rounds of gunfire that rang out in the vicinity of 174 Avon Avenue.
Several police officers arrived at the scene and found a severely wounded, unconscious, and unresponsive male suffering multiple gunshots in his head, chest and abdomen at that location.
The victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel a short time later, according to officials.
Newark Police immediately handed over the investigation to the prosecutor's office, who will determine the motive for the shooting.
The investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been reported.
