Newark authorities are investigating a pedestrian strike that caused fatal injuries to a person in the city's South Ward on Thursday night.
According to preliminary reports, police were called to the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Poinier Street to investigate reports of an injured person before 10 p.m.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found the severely injured person lying in the roadway unconscious.
The victim was transported to University Hospital where they were pronounced dead a short time later.
Police taped off the intersection and notified The Essex County Prosecutor's Office to assist in the investigation.
There were no other injuries reported.
