One Dead After Car Veers Off Garden State Parkway Into Wooded Area, Plunges into Water in Clark

Emergency responders and rescue crews worked frantically to find and extricate occupants from a car that veered off the Garden State Parkway and into a wooded area in Union County Sunday.

According to o preliminary reports, the early morning collision happened just before 1:22 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 135 in Clark.

Police say the driver of the vehicle somehow lost control -in an area deemed by several media sources as the 'Bermuda Triangle' for crashes on the highway- then entered a wooded area where the car plunged and partially submerged in a small body of water.

Boat and water rescue teams from Union County were able to make it to the vehicle where they found an unidentified person inside.

According to officials, emergency CPR was administered but unsuccessfully. The victim died at the scene.

Although a helicopter ariel search was conducted, NJ State Police has not confirmed any additional victims inside the car as of 4:10 a.m.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.
