Newark Public Safety officials report that some 80 members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a two-alarm fire at Giordano Recycling with two firefighters injured during the night of July 6.
According to reports, just before 6:45 p.m., firefighters responded to 142 Frelinghuysen Avenue and located a large fire on all floors of the three-story, 300-ft. building.
Firefighters searched for occupants and reported none present in the building. A second alarm was called at 6:57 p.m.
The Fire Department reported that two firefighters suffered minor injuries after they both fell from a loading dock.
One remained on duty while the other was transported to University Hospital where he was evaluated and released before also returning to duty. No other injuries have been reported.
The fire was considered under control at 8:22 p.m.
The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
