The Essex County Prosecutors Office has launched an investigation into a shooting that killed one person in Newark Friday evening.
According to a preliminary investigation, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the 500 block of South 18th Street shortly before 9:25 p.m.
Units arrived at the scene and found one person struck by bullets; then were told by residents that a second person was transported by private vehicle to University Hospital suffering serious injuries.
Police say after canvassing the scene, officers found several shell casings.
One of the two victims was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the hospital.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
