UPDATE: A police officer in Asbury Park suffered non-life threatening injuries after engaging with protesters during overnight demonstrations that broke out in the city.
According to Asbury Park Police, one officer was injured after demonstrators threw rocks at officers who ordered them to go home after officials imposed an 8 p.m. curfew earlier in the day in anticipation of the protest.
Poice say thousands of protesters had gathered at the Asbury Park Post Office earlier in the evening to denounce police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis last week.
According to police, 12 protesters were taken into custody and charged with various crimes. Police say an Asbury Park Press reporter was also taken into custody.
The demonstration began peacefully but grew intense as officers moved in to began to enforce the curfew, which caused heated verbal exchanges between officers in riot gear and protestors.
Police say the protest caused some property damage.
