A Roselle man accused of robbing a Rahway store Friday was arrested, according to police.
Police said that shortly before noon on Friday, a masked man entered the Beverly Sweet Shop located at 1413 Main Street, pointed a handgun at a clerk and said “put your hands up,” said police Detective Sgt. Richard Long.
The armed man, later identified as 19-year-old Elijah Whitted, made off with money and a pack of cigarettes, Long said.
An officer responding to the store called in a description of the gunman, and a short time later Whitted was spotted running toward Elm Avenue, where he was arrested by Rodger, Detective Daniel Dalbero and Officer Marcus Giammetta, the sergeant said.
Whitted was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and weapons offenses, and possession of stolen property because the gun find on him was stolen, Long said.
Whitted is being held on $186,000 bail at the Union County jail in Elizabeth.
