UPDATE: 16-Year-Old Newark Boy Charged with Shooting at Maplewood Attempted Carjacking Victim

The Maplewood Police Department is pleased to report that an arrest has been made related to an Attempted Carjacking that occurred in our Township on Oakland Rd on April 15th.

According to a statement released by Maplewood Chief DeVaul, detectives quickly located video footage where officers identified the vehicle that was used in connection to the incident.

Detectives sent out a “bolo” to all surrounding police agencies including a photo of the suspect’s vehicle.

Chief DeVaul said detectives working in collaboration with the Newark Police Department located the vehicle on Thursday in the West Ward.

Detectives conducted surveillance of the vehicle, waited until back up arrived then conducted a stop on the car without further incident.

Police say the vehicle involved was impounded and towed back to Maplewood Police Headquarters.

Detectives through the course of their investigation were able to positively identify the actor involved in the incident according to Chief DeVaul.

Officials say detectives are also attempting to locate and identify other suspects that may have been involved in the incident.

Detectives then reviewed the case with the Essex County Prosecutors Office who approved the following charges:

A 16-year-old of Newark was charged with Aggravated Assault 2C: 12-1B (4), Possession of a Weapon 2C: 39-5B, Possession of Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, and Robbery Carjacking 2C: 15-2a(1).

Police say the Juvenile was processed and transported to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center. Other charges in this case are pending in this case.
