The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is looking into a shooting that left a person dead inside a vehicle in Newark early Thursday morning.
According to preliminary reports, gunfire rang out in the vicinity of 125 Avon Avenue at approximately12:50 a.m.
Police arrived and found an unconscious and unresponsive male inside a vehicle suffering bullet wounds at that location.
Police said they canvassed the area and found multiple shell casings in the area of Ridgewood and Madison avenues where they believe the victim was shot then drove the short distance to the supermarket 's parking lot.
According to authorities, the victim was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation and the shooter remains at-large.
