McGuire Funeral Home officials of Washington D.C. have confirmed the death of a former Newark Public Schools Superintendent.
Officials say, Dr. Clifford B. Janey, 73, passed away on Thursday, February 13th, from an unspecified illness.
Dr. Janey was a resident of New Jersey at the time of passing, according to funeral home officials.
He led the Newark School district from 2008-2011 before being appointed as a Senior Weismann Fellow at Backstreet College of Education in New York City. Officials say Dr. Janey's last known position was a Senior Research Scholar at Boston University’s School of Education.
Appointed by former Governor Jon Corzine, offcials say as the State District Superintendent of Newark, Dr. Janey led the best case ever for the school district to remove itself from state control in its sixteen-year history.
Dr. Janey has received numerous national and local awards for his relentless efforts and innovative initiatives in early childhood education, pre-k, 16 academic standards, collective bargaining and authentic accountability. His most recent distinguished Alumni award from Boston University for excellence in leadership and service is further evidence of his understanding to connect research, policy and practice according to published reports.
Funeral arrangements for Dr. Janey have not been released at this time.
