Firefighter Injured in Newark West Ward Fire

Police and fire officials in Newark are reporting that members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a two-alarm fire at 35-37 West End Avenue with one firefighter injured today.

According to a statement released by police, shortly after 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a call of a fire in a three-story wood frame residential building.

A second alarm was activated at 1:40 p.m., with some 65 firefighters responding and the fire extending to an adjacent residence at 33 West End Avenue.

A firefighter was injured as a result of a partial ceiling collapse inside 35-37 West End.

He has been transported to University Hospital with complaints of pain to his back, neck and hip.

A fire captain was also evaluated at the scene by EMS for a pain complaint, but remained on duty.

Four adults have been relocated from 35-37 West End Avenue and nine adults and one child have been relocated from 33 West End Avenue.

The fire was considered under control at 3 p.m.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
