Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of Joanisson DeSouza, 31, of Newark, who was being sought after police responded to University Hospital yesterday on a call that a pregnant woman had been assaulted by a man she knows.
The victim was treated for her injuries and is reportedly in stable condition.
Detectives investigating this incident identified Joanisson DeSouza as a suspect in this incident and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
DeSouza was located by members of the Newark Police Fugitive Apprehension Division and Special Victims Unit along with the U.S. Marshals Service at the Spring Lane Motel, 930 Spring Street in Elizabeth.
He was arrested at approximately 5:30 p.m. today without incident. He faces charges of aggravated assault, criminal mischief and weapon possession under domestic violence laws
These charges are merely accusations.
This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
