According to a statement released by police, at 6:17 p.m., the Union Fire Department was dispatched to 1979 Hillside ave for an odor of smoke inside the home.
Police say the first unit to arrive was Battalion 1, who immediately notified all responding companies of a working fire on the first floor extending to the 2nd floor.
As crews walked around the home they noticed the entire back of the house was on fire with a woman at a second floor window calling for help.
Police say Battalion 1 called for a ground ladder to the rear to facilitate a rescue.
Members of Ladder 1 and Engine 2 put up the ladder with two members making entry in through the window and found the women who was now unconscious.
Police say firefighters pulled the woman through the window and passed her off to members of Engine 2.
Police say the woman was brought down the ladder to awaiting EMS who transported her to St. Barnabus Burn Center where doctors listed her in critical condition.
Police say another male victim self- extricated from the home as firefighters arrived.
According to police, he was also transported to St. Barnabus for smoke inhalation but should be released in a few days.
The fire ultimately went to three-alarms due to the rescue, the amount of fire and the weather conditions police said.
The fire was brought under control in about 60-minutes and is currently under investigation by the Union County Investigation unit and appears to be accidental at this time.
