The Jersey City Police and Fire Departments responded to the Frank Conwell Middle School at approximately 1:30 pm today.
Officials say upon arrival, emergency responders were advised pepper spray had been deployed inside the gymnasium.
School officials evacuated the 18 students and 1 teacher inside the room at the time according to officials.
Six students were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for complaints of respiratory distress due to exposure.
According to officials, Jersey City Hazmat units responded to the scene and determined the spray had dissipated.
Emergency responders provided school officials with proper cleaning and safety procedures officials said.
The school has not filed charges against any student responsible for the incident at this time.
