Police in Newark are on the search for a suspect who opened fire near an elementary school this afternoon in the city's Central Ward.
According to police, The Louis A. Spencer School was placed in a 'shelter in place' status after a black male -who wore a black shirt- arrived in the 100 block of Monmouth Street and began to fire off several rounds in the area.
Police say the suspect fled the scene towards Spruce Street and remains at-large.
Students and staff were allowed to leave the school at around 3:05 p.m. and no injuries were reported.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
