Resident Complaints of Drug Trafficking Results in Quality of Life Crackdown; Multiple Arrests

Newark

Police officials in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Jamal Walker, 21, for gun possession and Mr. Hassan Alexander, 18, for drug distribution as part of a location operation Thursday.

According to a statement released by Newark Police, Walker was arrested after police patrolling the 100 block of Pennington Street observed him with a loaded handgun. Police say he faces weapon possession charges, including having an extended magazine.

The gun had been reported stolen out of Columbia, South Carolina according to police.

“We conduct these operations in areas where we receive citizen complaints,” Director Ambrose said. “The residents of our city are committed to ensuring that their neighborhoods remain safe. We are grateful for their partnership,” he added.

Police say officers arrested Alexander in the area of Ross and Thorne streets after observing him selling drugs. Alexander ran, tossing plastic bags to the ground. He was quickly caught and police say they recovered 84 envelopes of heroin and five vials of crack cocaine in the bags he tossed.

Alexander also had $131.00 in cash and is also charged with drug distribution and possession police said.

Police say Ms. Ikeisha K. Ellison, 43, of Newark, was arrested in the same area yesterday. She is charged with contempt of court for an outstanding warrant out of Elizabeth.

Police in the area of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Middleton, NJ. A 15-year old male was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property before being released to a parent.

These charges are merely accusations.
