Newark Police officials are reporting that police have recovered five handguns and arrested four men in less than a week.
According to a statement released by police, on Sunday, police arrested Mr. Dajuan A. Copeland-Hudley, 26, of East Orange, after responding to a West Ward residence on a call of family trouble.
As part of their investigation, officers located a loaded handgun that Copeland-Hudley had pointed at himself and then placed under a bed when police arrived.
Police charged Copeland-Hudley with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain persons prohibited from weapon possession and criminal mischief.
Police say on Saturday, officers arrested Mr. Dominik Siler, 28, of Newark, after 2nd Precinct officers patrolling the 300 block of Mt. Prospect Avenue, observed him with a bag of marijuana. He fled upon becoming aware of police presence, tossing a handgun.
Police said they found Siler in possession of approximately 28 grams of marijuana, one small bag of cocaine and a loaded handgun.
Siler faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of prohibited weapons (large-capacity magazine and hollow points) and CDS possession.
On the same date, detectives were patrolling the area of Scheerer Avenue and Bergen Street when they observed a silver 4-door Honda Accord with a strong smell of burning marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Police observed the back seat passenger, Mr. Bryan Rivers, 28, of Newark, had an open black fanny pack, which contained a loaded handgun.
Police say Rivers was arrested and charged with multiple weapons counts.
According to police Mr. Joseph L. Amos, 22, of Newark, was arrested on Tuesday, July 30th after police responded to Broad and Court streets on a call of a man with a red face mask, white t-shirt and gray sweat pants in the area.
As police responded, Amos he fled on foot, tossing a handgun to the ground. Amos was arrested and found in possession of 16 glassine envelopes of suspected CDS heroin.
Police say they recovered the tossed handgun, which was loaded. Amos is charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of CDS and resisting arrest.
While canvassing the 100 block of Sheerer Avenue, detectives found a loaded handgun wrapped in black clothing in a rear window of a vacant residence. No arrests have been made, but this incident remains under investigation.
These charges are merely accusations.
Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
