Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Gerald W. Traynor, 53, a former Sergeant in the Long Beach Township Police Department, pled guilty today, to one count of third-degree Computer Criminal Activity, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:20-25c, before the Honorable Wendel E. Daniels, Pr.J.Cr.P. Traynor has been suspended from the Long Beach Township Police Department since the date of his arrest, April 1, 2019.
Officials say today’s plea was the result of an extensive investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Unit, in cooperation with the Long Beach Township Police Department.
During the course of the investigation, Detectives determined that Traynor, who is also a practicing attorney on Long Beach Island, accessed secure law enforcement computer terminals for personal reasons. During Traynor’s plea colloquy,
Traynor admitted he was aware that the computer databases were intended for law enforcement purposes only.
Traynor acknowledged that he accessed the system in April of 2018 to obtain information on an individual for personal reasons.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the State will recommend a sentence of non-custodial probation.
The plea agreement required that Traynor forfeit his current position with Long Beach Township Police Department as well as any other public employment, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:51-2.
Traynor is scheduled to be sentenced on September 5, 2019.
