Human Remains Found Inside Bag at State Line Scenic Lookout in Alpine

The Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the investigation into the discovery of what appear to be human remains at Stateline Lookout scenic overlook in Alpine.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Anthony Cureton, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department under the direction of Chief Steven Shallop.

Police say at approximately 8:00 a.m. on today, employees arrived for work at the Stateline Lookout snack stand and found a plastic bag hanging on the door.

The workers noticed that the contents of the bag appeared to be bones and they contacted the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department to report their suspicious finding.

Upon arrival, the officers further inspected the contents of the bag and concluded that the bones were similar to that of a human, so they contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit and Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office to initiate a death investigation.

The investigation into the identity and origin of the remains is ongoing and the Prosecutor’s Office is seeking to identify the person who found the remains to get additional information on where exactly they were located.
