A police officer in Newark is being credited with rescuing the driver of a vehicle that left the roadway and fell into the water of a North Ward Lake.
It happened at approximately 11:40 p.m. on the Lake Street and Park Avenue side of the river where a vehicle lost control, crash through a gate then plunged into the Branch Brook Park Lake.
Officials say a police officer witnessed the incident then jumped into action by leaping into the water and saving one person inside the vehicle.
EMS arrived on the scene to evaluate the victim who suffered no severe injuries.
Police are trying to determine how the driver lost control of the vehicle and if the car experienced mechanical issues before it smashed through the gate.
The incident remains under investigation.
