Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces the arrest of Greisy Breton, 40, of Cherry Hill for Theft in the Third Degree.
Officials say Breton was arrested Wednesday May 30th, by members of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit.
Breton is charged with participating in a scam where individuals were contacted by telephone and told that a relative was in trouble and needed bail to be released from jail.
A senior citizen residing in Texas was contacted and persuaded to wire $6,200 into a bank account in Paterson, controlled by Breton.
Senior citizens are often victimized by this scheme. Victims are told that there is an emergency involving the senior citizen’s grandchildren or other relatives.
They are then instructed to deposit funds into a bank account or send cash by parcel delivery according to officials.
Senior citizens should be cautioned not to wire, transfer or send money to strangers as a result of telephone solicitation.
Theft in the Third Degree is punishable by a three to five year New Jersey State prison term.
The investigation is continuing.
The investigation was conducted by the Financial Crimes Unit of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Breton was released on a summons-complaint and is scheduled for a CJP hearing on June 12, 2019.
A criminal indictment is merely an accusation.
Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
