Mother Charged with Throwing Her Baby in the Ocean Police Said

Atlantic City

Authorities in Atlantic City charged a 23-year-old woman with second-degree aggravated assault after tossing her baby into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday.

Police said Patricia Shurig was seen throwing the baby in the water near the end of Pacific Avenue in the city’s Inlet section. Shurig later jumped into the water according to authorities.  Several bystanders jumped into the ocean, pulling the child and the mother out of the water a short time later.

A fisherman at the scene reportedly gave the baby CPR before EMS arrived to transport the mother and the baby to a nearby hospital. Shurig is being held on $100,000 bail.

Authorities praised the men who jumped into the ocean to rescue Shurig and the baby calling their actions "acts of bravery".
