**NEWARK POLICE UPDATE 3:08pm:** Newark Police Director Anthony Ambrose stated that as a result of the investigation, the male victim was shot several hours AFTER the basketball tournament and had nothing to do with the event. The incident remains under investigation.
Police in Newark are investgiating a shots fired incident that connected on a male on a street in Newark on Saturday.
Officials are attempting to piece together what transpired during the incident, but according to preliminary reports, Rutgers Police contacted Newark authorities when a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the leg entered University Hospital's emergency department at approximately 9:28 p.m.
Newark Police officers arrived at the hospital and were told by the victim that while walking in the area of 4th Avenue between North 12th and North 13th, he heard two loud popping noises, so he began to run from the area where a basketball tournament was being held.
The victim said that he noticed a pain in his leg and made his way to University Hospital by an unspecified transportation means.
Police set up a crime scene in the area and located several shell casings, but officers did not find any other casualties.
Authorities have not confirmed if the victim was going to or returning from the basketball event at this time
