Police in Newark announced the arrest of Mr. Ronald L. Phillips, 52, of Newark, for an armed carjacking that occurred on Saturday, April 20th.
According to police, shortly before 1:50 a.m., officers responded to the Exxon Gas Station at 1 Elizabeth Avenue on a call of a carjacking.
Police say the victim -a female driver- was sitting in her parked vehicle waiting for her passengers to return from inside the station’s mini-mart when a man opened her driver’s side door and ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
According to police, the man drove away in the vehicle taking the victim’s cell phone and other personal property.
Police charged Phillips with the carjacking after he was arrested in an unrelated incident by Union Township Police, according to authorities.
Police say Philips was operating the carjacked vehicle at the time of his arrest in Union.
Philips also faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose according to police.
These charges are merely accusations.
This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
