The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that resulted in a fatality of one person in Newark late Saturday night.
According to preliminary reports, multiple rounds of gunfire rang out in the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and South 9th Street just before 11:40 p.m. sending police to the scene where they immediately taped off the area after located a male suffering gunshot wounds.
EMS rushed the unconscious and unresponsive victim to University Hospital where doctors pronounced the unidentified male dead a short time later.
Police officers on the scene requested additional assistance as a crowd of onlookers began to converge on the area, but there were no other incidents at that location.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation and the suspect remains at large.
