Police officials in two Essex County municipalities are looking into a shooting that had a woman enter a Belleville Hospital suffering a gunshot wound during the overnight hours.
According to preliminary reports, Belleville Police were dispatched to Clara Maass shortly before 1 a.m. when an unidentified female entered the emergency department suffering a gunshot wound.
The victim reported to authorities that the shooting occurred in the vicinity of West End and South Orange avenues earlier in the evening. Doctors treated the victim for non-life threatening injuries according to reports.
Police arrived at the shooting scene at around 8:50 p.m. after a gunman fired multiple rounds in the area then fled the scene. It is not immediately clear if bullets struck any other victims at this time.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
