Newark's First African American Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Dies

Essex County official are reporting the passing of Newark's first African American Mayor Mr. Kenneth Gibson, 86, this afternoon.

According to a statement released by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo:

"Ken Gibson is part of Newark's history. He led the city during a difficult time, worked hard to find common ground among the city's diverse population and his contributions laid the foundation for Newark's recovery. Ken was a true Newarker who influenced me as a public servant and, most importantly, he was a friend".

Kenneth Allen Gibson was elected in 1970 as the 34th Mayor of Newark, the largest city in the state. He was the first African American elected mayor of any major Northeastern United States city. He served from 1970 to 1986 according to officials.
