The Elizabeth School District announced the launch of an investigation after a number of students allegedly attempted to alter grades and attendance records.
Superintendent of Schools, Olga Hugelmeyer issued the following statement:
“We take seriously our responsibility to gather and store your information. Therefore, our Department of Information Technology has analyzed our student data records to better understand the access gained by the students involved to further clarify the extent of the data compromise that has taken place. Additionally, the Elizabeth Public Schools has contacted law enforcement authorities.”
Officials say the investigation into the record-keeping system is ongoing and steps are being taken to secure all data.
Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that approximately half-dozen high school students who accessed attendance records and two failed attempts to alter grades earlier this month.
According to district officials, consequences for all those involved is likely to be severe but because of student privacy laws, additional details could not be disclosed.
The incident remains under investigation.
