Newark Fire officials are reporting that members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a three-alarm fire, with one fire captain injured, Monday evening.
According to preliminary reports, at approximately 6:55 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at a three-story residential building at 149 Mt. Prospect Avenue.
Officials say, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm at 7:03 p.m. and was quickly re-upgraded to a third alarm at 7:07 p.m., calling for the response of some 85 firefighters.
The fire extended to two adjacent buildings at 147 Mt. Prospect Avenue, a three-story residential construction, and at 151-153 Mt. Prospect Avenue, a two-story duplex. All three buildings sustained massive fire damage according to fire officials.
Fire officials say one fire captain suffered neck injuries and was transported to University Hospital for treatment, but no other injuries were reported.
"Ten families, including 15 adults, eight children and three pet dogs, were relocated. This number may increase as additional residents arrive home" Fire officials said.
The fire was considered under control at 8:49 p.m.
Firefighters from the cities of Irvington, Montclair, Millburn, Elizabeth, Belleville, Bloomfield, South Orange, West Orange, East Orange and Jersey City assisted during this incident. Members of the Newark Police Division and EMS also responded.
The cause and origin of this fire is under investigation by members of the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
