Newark Police officials have issued a correction in an earlier statement regarding an arrest of a man they said is wanted for murder.
According to the corrected statement, police say, Mr. Joe T. Carr, 23, is connected with a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, February 12th in the West Ward but not the Lindsley Street homicide that happened on Friday as was first stated a press release.
Authorities say shortly before 6:30 p.m., police responded to the 200-block of Alexander Street on a call of shots fired where they arrived to find a male victim severely injured after being shots at that location.
Police officials say the victim was pronounced dead a short time later according to the corrected statement.
Detectives investigating this incident secured a warrant for the arrest of Joe T. Carr in connection with the fatal shooting.
Police say on Sunday, officers from the 6th Precinct observed Carr, who was on a bicycle, in the area of Alexander and Lindsley streets where they immediately took him into custody.
Carr was found in possession of a loaded .357 caliber handgun and CDS heroin according to police.
Police charged Carr with Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice, Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession and CDS Possession.
“I commend the members of the 6th Precinct who left no stone unturned in quickly apprehending this suspect,” Director Ambrose said. “We are vigorously committed to removing violent individuals, seizing illegal guns from our streets and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”
These charges are merely accusations.
This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
