Essex County authorities took a 14-year-old girl into custody and charged her with disorderly conduct after an incident that had residents in the area reporting that they heard sounds that sounded like gunfire during the altercation.
A request for public information regarding the incident that occurred on Saturday was returned to RLS Media by a spokesperson for the Sherrif's Office who stated that at approximately 7 p.m., a large crowd attempted to enter the skating rink when multiple fights began to break out on the outside of the facility.
According to the spokesperson, a sheriff's office detail unit -assigned to the rink- notified Newark, East Orange and other police agencies to assist breaking up physical confrontations that took place between several groups.
Officials say while they attempted to break up one of the fights, a 14-year-old girl began kicking, punching and spitting during the confrontation when they asked her to stop. The girl was immediately taken into custody.
According to the spokesperson, the report of shots fired heard in the area was a garbage can that fell and made a loud bang which caused teenagers to run from the scene. Officials say there was no evidence of gunfire or injuries reported.
The incident remains under investigation.
