Newark Police officials announced the arrest of Mr. Ahmaad Qualls, 18, of Newark, for a shots fired incidnet that occurred in Newark's North Ward.
According to police, at approximately 12:20 a.m., police in the area of Broadway and Herbert Place heard shots fired.
Police say the officers observed a man walking with a gun in his waistband. The suspect ran and officers pursed him on foot.
The suspect, Ahmaad Qualls, ignored the officers’ commands to stop and reached for the weapon while fleeing according to police.
Qualls then tossed the weapon and was apprehended at Herbert Place near Riverside Avenue. Officers recovered a 9MM handgun in this incident police said.
“I am grateful that no one was shot in this incident and that we recovered another unlawful handgun from our streets,” Director Ambrose said. “Police Chief Henry and I commend these officers for applying their training and exercising keen discipline in resolving this incident without deadly force or injury to the suspect in the face of imminent danger.”
Police charged Qualls with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (large capacity magazine and hollow points), Resisting Arrest and Obstruction of the Administration of the Law.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
