Retired Police Officer Intervenes in Suicide Attempt on Newark-Irvington Township Border

Newark Irvington Township

Irvington Township will handle the investigation into a reported suicide attempt that occurred in a parking lot of a restaurant that tightly sits on the border of Newark.

According to preliminary reports, a retired police officer contacted Newark Police when he observed an armed man barricaded inside a car just behind the Wendy's on Chancellor Avenue at approximately 10:50 a.m.

With the incident occurring yards from the border of both cities, Newark Police arrived first at the scene and initiated the investigation.

The unidentified off-duty officer was able to get the emotionally distressed man to disarm then accompanied him to Beth Israel Hospital for treatment.

Police confirmed that there was a weapon in the car with ammunition inside it.

Irvington Township Police were called to the scene to complete the investigation and remove the weapon from the vehicle.

**NOTE:** The parking lot of the Wendy's split the two towns where the front of restaurant -on the Chancellor Avenue side- is Newark, but Irvington Township officials govern the rear parking area according to police. The remaining area of the parking, that has The old Valley Fair -Valley Mall-, is Irvington Township.
