Officials announced the arrest of a 24-year-old Newark man found in possession of a loaded handgun and CDS yesterday.
According to police, shortly before 7:40 p.m., police patrolling the area of Lincoln Park and Pennsylvania Avenue observed a man inside a vehicle with a clear sandwich bag containing several vials of cocaine. When the man became aware of police presence, police say the man quickly exited the vehicle and attempted to hide the plastic bag.
In addition to the plastic bag, officers saw the man drop 10 decks of heroin from inside the vehicle. The suspect, later identified as Laquan Tariq Haywood-Echols, was immediately arrested.
Police found Haywood-Echols in possession of a loaded .22 caliber handgun, 68 glassine envelopes of heroin, 67 vials of cocaine, 131 pills, a hand-rolled cigar containing marijuana and $192.25 in cash.
Authorities charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, two counts of CDS Possession and Possession of Prescription Legend Drugs.
These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
