Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and New Jersey Institute of Technology Police Chief Joseph Marswillo announced today that Brianna Williams, 21, of East Orange has been arrested for the fatal hit and run that resulted in the death of NJIT student Ms. Naomi R. Segura, 25, of Byram Township.
Authorities said on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at approximately 9:20 p.m. the victim, a pedestrian, was struck by a red Jeep Cherokee in the vicinity of Central Avenue and Summit Street in Newark.
Police say Segura sustained life threatening injuries, was rushed to University Hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The car that struck her did not stop. The driver of a second car did stop and called for help.
After an extensive investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigations Bureau, Williams was charged. She is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
A detention hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning before the Honorable Siobhan Teare, Judge of the Superior Court.
The case is being handled by Assistant Prosecutor Tara Creegan.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
