A freshman from New Jersey City University took the honor of being named The 2018 Miss Ironbound in a hotly contested pageant that was hosted by The Newark Boys and Girls Club-Salvation Army in Newark's East Ward.
According to pageant officials, Newark Ironbound resident Miss Sophia De Oliveira stunned the sold-out crowd of about 200 when judges named awarded her the crown at around 11 p.m. Saturday evening.
The pageant is a yearly event in Newark's Ironbound section and this year featured more than 30 contestants in different age ranges.
De Oliveira in her first year at New Jersey City University is focusing her talents on the field of Nursing and graduated as an honor student from Newark's Arts High School. The Miss Ironbound win not only places De Oliveira among the ranks of some of the greatest East Ward pageant winners but this will allow her to vie for other possible statewide pageants according to officials.
