An Elizabeth man has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old neighbor during the course of nearly two years, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced, Monday.
Moises Calle, 44, of the 900 block of Pennington Street in Elizabeth is charged with second-degree sexual assault, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.
Calle turned himself in to authorities at the Union County Child Advocacy Center on Friday afternoon, after an investigation revealed that he allegedly touched the victim inappropriately several times during a period starting in January 2013 and ending earlier this month. The case was recently referred to the Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit by the Elizabeth Police Department.
Bail for Calle was set at $150,000 by state Superior Court Judge Scott J. Moynihan, after which he was lodged in Union County Jail. Calle also was ordered to surrender his passport and instructed not to have any contact with the alleged victim.
Convictions on second-degree crimes typically result in penalties of 5 to 10 years in state prison, while third-degree offenses typically result in terms of 3 to 5 years.
