A 32-year-old police officer Monday was found guilty of striking a 23-year-old Paterson man with his vehicle and fleeing the scene.
According to officials, Jose Urena, of North Haledon, was off-duty on June 16, 2015 when he struck Jaquill Fields, 23, around 8:30 p.m. near Fourth and Temple streets in Paterson and then fled from the scene.
Authorities say Fields was seriously injured and was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office's charged Urena following an intensive investigation. Following Urena’s 2015 arrest, he was suspended without pay.
